A 3 Day Juice Cleanse Experience

Hi friends! How are you today? 
I'm well, up, breakfast in belly (2 eggs, 1 piece of nut bread), coffee in hand...ready to conquer the world (or 2 kids on summer vacation)!

Before we went to the beach last week, Angelo & I did a "juice cleanse". It was supposed to be 3 days, but ended up being two. And this is all about our experience with "cleansing" ourselves via juice. 

A couple months ago I brought home a juicing pamphlet from a local juice shop. Angelo & I looked at it, and talked about it as a "yeah we should try this some time" but never did it. 

Fast forward a couple months to when I was driving to work and just felt kinda crumby. 
I was craving a green juice and went to the local juice shop to get one. While I was there I saw the same pamphlet and texted Angelo:
 "Hey you want to juice some this week?" 
"Sounds good to me!"
"Easy Peasy, right? 
:) "

I pre-ordered the juices and told them I'd be back the next day to pick them up. 
This set us up to juice Friday-Sunday. I should of known that I was setting myself up to fail by picking the weekend days to juice.
 I initially just wanted to do two days, but the way it was advertised was 1,3, or 5 days. So what the heck, gimme 3 days!  

 The night before the cleanse, I started reading about juice cleanses. I know... I should of done this before I threw down $200 to "cleanse".

Have you ever googled "juice cleanse"? You'll get all kinds of articles on all sides of this debate. I read articles on all sides. 

Some were saying 1-3 day cleanses are amazing for you and all about the pros, while others read there are no benefits of juicing. Hmm...who can we trust these days?

My opinion: I've never done a juice cleanse before because I honestly think they aren't necessary. I think our bodies naturally clean themselves of toxins on the daily. That's why we have livers, kidneys, and a gastrointestinal (GI) tract in our wonderful bodies! Our bodies are amazing machines and if treated right and fueled property with a balanced diet, does all the work for us. I consider juice cleanses to be an "extreme". 
Also, I've juiced at home before and was shocked at all the waste. You throw away almost the entire vegetable or fruit!  I would put 5 carrots in the juicer; it was spit out a half cup of juice on one end, and a mountain of carrot shreds on the other. I'd rather eat those carrots shreds then wash it down with the juice. 

 So why was I doing this juice cleanse?  
1. I've never done one.
2. I wanted to see how I felt after cutting out all the stuff we're trying to "cleanse" our bodies of: caffeine, sugar, gluten, dairy 
3. To be able to relate to someone who asks/tells me about a juice cleanse  

My Thoughts PRE-cleanse 
  • Oh these bottles are pretty big.  
  • This shouldn't be too hard. I mean I've gotten food poisoning and lost my appetite for 3 days before . Same thing...right?
  • I can't wait for day #2! I've read about having a huge burst of energy! 


Friday/Day 1: 
The moment I woke up on Friday morning I craved breakfast. I'm so used to eating my usual 2 eggs and toast that I felt lost without it. This was literally the only thing on my mind for the first hour of me being awake. As the day went on it got easier. I went to work and my mind was busy. The only thing I noticed is that I was constantly looking at the clock to make sure I didn't miss my juice time. I also opted out of the gym for the day because I had a feeling it would of been a lazy workout anyways. I  went swimming with my kids instead. Thoughts:
  • Why am I doing this?  
  • OK, no negative thoughts! We got this! 3 days...That's it! 
  • I'm doing really well, this isn't too bad. 
  • Are we allowed to have carrots?  
  • I have a head ache.  
  • I wonder what this dog food tastes like?  
  • 8am, 10:30am, 12:30....counting down to my next juice. 
  • Why are these bottles so small!? 
  • Slow down, savor it, don't drink it to fast!  

Saturday/Day 2:  
Saturday morning I woke up feeling good. I wasn't hungry and actually looked forward to my green morning juice. 
I made myself busy that morning by going out for a mani/pedi with Alisha.
Then I came home, and things changed.

  • Can I just eat this turkey sandwich I just made for Sophia?
  • I need to do something..let's go swimming!
  • I just swam laps, that deserves something to eat right?
  • OK, just 3 pretzels? (confession)
  • Oh man, I just ruined it!
  • I have a head ache.
  • Why am I doing this?!


By the end of Day 2 I was over the juicing. I got sick of drinking the juices and they all started to taste the same. The entire day on Saturday was spent drooling over all the food I made my kids to eat. Unnecessary, self induced torture. 
Before we went to sleep, we both decided to eat on Sunday. We gave up. It was 8:00 pm and all I could think about was food. I chugged a glass of water and went to bed looking forward to what I would eat for breakfast the next day.

Overall
Two days was enough, heck, one day is enough and honestly, I felt exactly the same. I didn't have a huge burst of energy or feel any different. Maybe a little lighter, but mainly just hungry. 
I don't know if I lost any weight because I didn't weigh myself. I wasn't looking to lose any and I know once I ate a solid I would gain it all back anyways. 

Sorry folks, I'd rather eat those 50 carrots and 5 buckets of kale than drink them.

    1. :) I'll try a lot of stuff once! I know a lot of people who do them regularly. It just wasn't for me. Maybe a 1 day cleanse yearly. LOL
